Base = the drug of choice for your modern triathlete

Getting your body fit without work or as Bruce Lee puts it "The art of fighting, without fighting." If you are going to do it, do it right. Base workouts have to be apart of your T3 (schedule). Triathlon is an ENDURANCE sport, we have to put our bodies through the motions. Mileage, mileage, mileage. Get moving. Don't stop...and for god's sake, don't push hard. Just keep that heart rate steady and go insane with every passing mile. I know, who is this newbie trigeek? Let me tell you. I AM A TRIATHLETE! I finished a sprint. hahaha.

No, but really. While training for that fatefull day, I "ran" into some trouble with my knees. Even at my fittest, I was never a runner. It was weird too. I couldn't get any answers. My second gear was stuck. My warm up walk was fine, building my heart rate so I can start the vigorous stuff, but as soon as I took that first step in second gear (faster on the treadmill - not even fast, I hate to use the word, but jogging) pain shot right to my knees. For all you none runners this might sound a little familiar. Now for the weird stuff, lets kick it up a notch. My third gear was fine. I got sick of the pain with every step and "wondered" what would the pain feel like if I went faster (I know masochist). Guess what...no pain. When I was in a flat out sprint everything was fine, for the minute/minute and a half that I could keep it up. Then I would have to down shift all the way down to first gear as to not feel the pain of second. I know...Weird I tell ya.

The event came and went. I now had time to incorporate a proper base to my T3. What da ya know, pains all gone. My body didn't have time to adjust to the mileage. And not just the motions but the constant pounding. As you can see in my 2007 race season, I'm planning on doing my first OLYMPIC distance at the end of the season. You can count on one thing. This tri-junkie is not going to be without his BASE.

Originally I had set out to make 07 my year of running. 08 was going to be about Tri-ing. Now, I have three tris in mind. One scheduled two I'm talking to the wife about. The last one is an Oly. It is about the same time as yours.

I think it sucks you can't do the things I take for granted, like running through the neighborhood. There are places in the world for good people. Hope your move works out for you.

Base is indeed everything. I'm up to 8-9 miles this weekend as I train for my half in march. Rock on, Tri-V. Tri-greatness awaits you.
