Tuesdays with Daddy

No, he's not dying. But its been a while since we've spent any type of quality time together. We went to the gym to do a few laps in the pool because he is doing the TRI Express Series #1 with me and that is what he's worried about.

You know what they say "you are your own worst critic." I think they are wrong, you are your family's worst critic. I could help but crtique and try to help him. Finally I get to say "It's for your own good. Just do things my way, you'll thank me later." I'm not saying he's slow, he can move when he wants to. He surfs all the time and is used to the board being under him. I could on and on about the differences in surfing and swimming in open water but don't worry, I won't.

The little direction I gave he picked up pretty quickly and was already showing improvement after 250 yards. Granted the entire "workout" was only 500 yards but he was done. The whole experience was about 30 minutes. I know that breaks down to about 6 minute per 100 yards but there was a lot of stopping and tips. We were probably really doing 3 minute 100's once you account for all the breaks between 50's. For those who are a little less familiar with aquatic terms. The length of the pool in your gym is probably 25 yards or meters. Swim to the end and back = 50 yards, do that again = 100 yards. Time this and you have measurable incriments to track your progress.

He did great for pool time (which he doesn't like, like I said he's a surfer). He wanted to know how his workout was going compared to mine. Hey I didn't bring it up...he asked for it. So I said to follow me and try to keep up for a 50. I went at under race pace (workout pace). He did an exellent job at keeping up maybe a half body-length at hitting the wall behind me and I'm sure it had to do with his turn-around and push off the wall from the other side. Hey, like I said, he can move when he wants to. But he was very winded, I think after 150 yards at that pace, I would have had to use that crane to get him out of the water. I told to remember to got at your own pace throughout the whole thing. I got the "yeah, yeah, yeah." (now he's quoting me when I was younger).

He keeps talking trash about the time I forgot to down shift on an incline and how this will happen again and he'll take me on the bike. We'll see.

PS: I'm testing a new script (in blue) on the side bar if you scroll down a little. Please drop a comment about what you think about the blog. I will be the only one that can read the info submitted so be candid.

That's really cool you guys are doig the tri together. Sometimes kids just need to find out stuff on their own. You will definitely inspire him to perform... That's cool.
